The Detroit Red Wings are done somewhat more than halfway with their 2013-14 regular seasons. And just as the first quarter, the second quarter was blemished by injuries and inconsistency.
During the four games, the Red Wings have scored 18 goals by a winning streak to end November and start December. It seems their lack of offensive play had been adjusted, but in the middle of December, the Red Wings experienced yet another six-game losing streak. They didn't score more than two goals in each game of the six.
What is worse is that the Red Wings is the injuries troubles they have had to meet in the December. Pavel Datsyuk missed 7 games, Henrik Zetterberg missed 11 games and Stephen Weiss, Johan Franzen, Danny DeKeyser, Stephen Weiss and Jonathan Ericsson are on the name list who have missed time in December.
According to Man Games Lost, totally, the Red Wings have lost 166 man games due to injuries as of January 5. Though the Red Wings have lost the seventh most man games, but they are far cry from teams like Anaheim (206) and Pittsburgh (243), both who go on to be strong in spite of their hits of injuries.
But, injuries are not an excuse for inconsistent play that any coach will say. The Red Wings can not catch some of those opportunities to pick up points when against struggling teams like the New York Islanders, Nashville and Florida. Every team has to face and handle injuries, but the good teams get ways to win while they are lost their best players.
The good news is that all done during the first half of the season have put them in a playoff position, but they have to begin turning those overtime and shootout losses they have gathered into wins. With the HBO cameras gone, we are sure that the players are expecting to a more normal working environment.
Jimmy Howard has come back with two strong games against the Dallas Stars and Maple Leafs after a forgettable game against the Predators on 30th Dec. In this year, Jimmy hasn't been his usual self and he also hasn't had the defense or goal support to back him up. He seems to be turning the corner after coming back from injury. And if the Red Wings wish to become more consistent in the second half of the season, Howard’s performance would be one of the keys.
And the Red Wings' home record is another thing needing to be improved. This year, they are 6-10-7 at Joe Louis Arena a place where is often very threaten for opposing teams to play. This is the same team that set a 22 consecutive home wins franchise record just two years ago.
The Olympic running will benefit some players rest up before the last month, but a few of the players will be playing in the Olympics. Therefore, everyone isn't as lucky.
Get some player healthy, fix the inconsistent play and start winning at home, then the Red Wings will be well going toward gaining a 23rd consecutive playoff berth.
